Today's climate of shifting tides, uncertainty, disorder and distress prevail. Of course, these are merely symptoms of an opportunity for us to exercise a closer walk with our Living Lord. His Word instructs us as follows: "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)
An incident in the Gospel of Mark presents a case-study whereby Jesus and His disciples were subjected to sudden, drastic, unpredictable and unfavorable storm conditions aboard a boat on the Sea of Galilee. Such conditions characterize the storms of life itself. As waves crashed violently against the boat, it began to fill up with water. Suddenly, the disciples were overcome by fear and panic. Jesus had previously retired to the rear of the boat, and was resting comfortably and peacefully.
Inasmuch as the "Prince of Peace" was in their midst, the external (and internal) storms of conflict that threatened their well-being could nowise cause them harm nor hurt. Had the frenzied disciples elected to fix their focus on, and their faith in Jesus, the rest and peace in Him would have found its way in them. Jesus was the only help they ever needed. Likewise, He is the only help that anyone will ever need.
Jesus was their "Calm" and He is ours, even in the midst of a raging storm and despite the form of the storm that's threatening. Nevertheless, Jesus rose up, spoke to the wind, issued a command to the sea... and there was a GREAT CALM. Finally, Jesus admonished His disciples for their complete lack of faithfulness. He is our refuge and strength, and a very present help in times of trouble.
Let us always remember, if we don't stand for Jesus, we will fall for anything: "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."
(1 Corinthians 10:12)
May the grace and peace of the Lord Jesus Christ overshadow you all.
