TECHNICALLY SPEAKING

Okay, so let’s get technical. In these latter days all we hear about is science, science, science with no mention of or credit given to the Lord our God. But here is some not so breaking news. Contrary to popular belief, there is no conflict between God and science. Many people think that we have no choice but to make a choice between science and God. That’s like saying I believe in the light bulb that I can see but not the inventor of the light bulb that I can’t see. Just because you don’t see or understand something doesn’t mean it isn’t true or it doesn’t exist. Kinda sorta like the disciple Thomas who doubted the veracity of the reports about the risen Christ. “But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe.” (John 20: 24-25)

However, when Thomas personally experienced and came to the knowledge of the real truth, there was a stunning reversal of attitude and acceptance of reality: “And after eight days again His disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith He to Thomas, reach hither thy finger, and behold My hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto Him, My Lord and my God.” (John 20: 26-28) Then Jesus taught Thomas a great lesson that we all must learn. A lesson that not only illuminates, but liberates. "Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” (John 20: 29)

There was no difference between the accounts of Christ rising from the dead and the fact that He was actually alive. The only ones who had a problem were those who did not believe or those who did not want to believe. It is amazing how we humans with our limited understanding readily accept every possibility science presents yet totally reject the undeniable existence of God because our carnal minds are unable to comprehend and appreciate His eternal glory and His everlasting love for us. “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2: 9 & 14) And that is the frailty of our humanity.

We must realize that in order to receive you have to believe. So the key is having faith which opens the door for the Spirit of God to bring divine enlightenment. “But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” (1 Corinthians 2: 10-13)

The choice, dear ones, is not between science and God, but whether your faith is in science or in God. Here’s the truth ... God created science. And we don’t put our trust in created things. Whether it’s the laws of nature or the laws of physics, science wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for God. He has set up its capabilities as well as its boundaries and controls it all. It is only God Almighty who has no limits. Science makes things that we can think possible. Faith makes things beyond what we can think possible. “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us…” (Ephesians 3: 20) Therefore our faith in God is not anti-science, our faith in God is beyond science. And like everything else in this universe and on this planet, it was created for us to use according to the will and wisdom of God. But as with everything else, it is us that abuses what God has created because of pride and arrogance. This is a design for disaster as the Apostle Paul pointed out, “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” (1 Corinthians 10: 12)

There are many stories in the Bible that illustrate this point. Take for instance the tower of Babel. “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let Us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.” (Genesis 11: 4-8)

The Exodus story also chronicles the futile attempts of man to elevate himself to the status of God with disappointing and painful results. If you will recall, the Egyptian Pharaoh would not release God’s people from captivity which started a series of 10 horrific plagues. Of course the dreaded 3-headed monster, which is rebellion, vanity and ego, reared its ugly head so Pharaoh called in his magicians to do what God did through Moses. First the magicians caused their staffs to become serpents like Aaron's. Of course Aaron's serpent swallowed theirs! Then the plagues started and they also turned bodies of water into blood and next summoned hordes of frogs from the river.

But then God had enough of their foolishness, and it was at that point that earthly science, acquired knowledge, parlor tricks and human ability came to a screeching halt. They were not allowed to replicate the next eight, even more devastating plagues. Understandably the magicians themselves confessed their failure to compete with God and acknowledged Who was actually in charge. “Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God…” (Exodus 8: 19) They were forced to admit their selfish and sinful inadequacies. Must we be forced to admit the same?

We may know a lot, but God knows all. And whatever we do know, it is God who has allowed us to know it. Therefore whatever we do know is nothing compared to what God knows. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55: 8-9) It is only when you take the corrupt thoughts and intentions of humankind out of the equation that we can we see what is truly attainable. “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” (Luke 18: 27) And, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4: 13) Only then can you believe that a donkey can talk (Numbers 22), that ravens can bring you breakfast (1 Kings 17), that a man can be swallowed whole by a great fish for 3 days and live (Jonah 1 & 2) or that a hand can appear out of nothing and write on a wall (Daniel 5).

But the Lord is so gracious that He will not force us to believe anything but gives us the opportunity to make a choice, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live…” (Deuteronomy 30: 18) This choice was even present in the Garden of Eden where the deception and disobedience of Adam and Eve led them to make the wrong choice. They desired to have their own prideful and arrogant understanding instead of God’s and therefore chose the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil” instead of the “Tree of Life.” Bad choice as King Solomon writes, “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.” (Ecclesiastes 1: 18) A choice which resulted in man’s fall from grace that we are still trying to recover from. But thank God for Jesus who has redeemed us back to the Father!

Technically speaking, God is so awesome, so magnificent and so glorious, He Himself knows that He has no equal. “For when God made promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no greater, He sware by Himself.” (Hebrews 6: 13) We must ensure that any knowledge we have or science we use is in conjunction with and subject to the will of God. With the blitz of information we are subjected to espousing the virtues of modern innovation and scientific advancement, it is important to have this attitude, “There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear Him, upon them that hope in His mercy; to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waiteth for the LORD: He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in Thee.” (Psalm 33: 17-22)

And so, beloved ones, the main point of this message is although there are things God has allowed in this world for our benefit and use such as machines, medicine, food, freedom, technology and even science, nothing compares to trusting in the Creator of all things and the benefits we receive from placing our trust in Him. Now is the time, more than ever and no matter what occurs, to “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3: 5 & 6)

Technically speaking, trust in God.
